- CRYOTHERAPY by Physician Assistants...2011 by Michael Cairns, MD
Ohio law currently prohibits a physician assistant (PA) from performing cryotherapy without special permission from the Ohio State Medical Board (OSMB). This restriction applies to dermatologists as well as other physicians, whether the procedure is performed with onsite or offsite supervision.
Many dermatoloigsts believe that having supervised PAs perform cryotherapy is desirable for patient
care. In such cases, dermatologists can request an exception to this policy for their PAs. Such requests typically require a written plan submitted to the OSMB detailing the training and supervision of the PA for cryotherapy.
The Ohio Dermatological Association is currently submitting a "model" exception plan to the OSMB for PAs performing cryotherapy under the supervision of a dermatologist. If approved, dermatologists should be able to have their PAs treat patients with cryotherapy by simply notifying the OSMB of their intent and following the guidelines delineated by this "model" exception plan.
This is just one example of the many things the ODA is doing to help dermatologists in Ohio concentrate on the practice, not hassles, of medicine.
